Size 13 or 15 needles, tapestry needle, large size crochet hook.
Bulky or double worsted wool yarn.
1.Cast on 20 (22, 24, 26) stitches leaving a 12" tail. [NOTE: you can work both booties at the same time by pulling yarn for one bootie from the center of your skein and yarn for the other bootie from the outside of your skein. By doing two at a time, you ensure that the booties will be the same length, and, when you're done, you're done!]
2.Work in following pattern until piece is two rows longer than square:
Row 1 and all odd rows: slip first stitch as if to purl, knit to end.
Row 2 and all even rows: *(slip 1 stitch as if to purl, knit 1), repeat to
end.
3.Next row: slip first stitch as if to purl, *(knit 2 together) to end.
4.Next row: *(slip 1 stitch as if to purl, knit 1), repeat to end.
5.Next row: slip first stitch as if to purl, *(knit 2 together) to end.
6.Cut yarn leaving 12" tail. Thread tapestry needle and pull
tail through remaining 6 (7, 7, 8) stitches. This forms the toe of your
bootie.
*** If you'd like to stop here, you are welcome to send the booties to Warm
Woolies at this point. We can use as many booties as possible and don't want
the finishing steps to deter anyone from trying this project. We'll be adding
photos for the last steps soon.***
7.Sew up just less than halfway to cast-one edge, weave in remainder of tail. [NOTE: Make sure to sew L O O S L E Y - if you pull your seam stitches tight, the seam will not felt.]
8.Using your cast-on tail, sew the heel seam as follows:
Sew about two-thirds of the way from the top of the heel towards the bottom. Flatten the bottom third of the heel so that your heel seam looks like an upside-down "T". Sew remaining one-third of heel seam across bottom and weave in remainder of tail. As in step 7, make sure to sew this seam loosely.
9.Work the cuff as follows: Using a contrasting color or the same color with a novelty yarn carried along, crochet 2 rounds of single crochet around bootie opening. Weave in tail. [NOTE: If you don't know how to crochet yet, here are two links to check out. http://www.learntoknit.com/instructions_cr.php3 or http://www.craftown.com/crolesson.htm Single crochet is an easy stitch to learn. As a knitter, it's a useful stitch for neatening/finishing edges.]
10.Felt the Booties. If you've not felted before, check out this site:
