Size 13 circular needles (16” or 24”) and same size double-pointed needles to work the final couple of rounds. Bulky or doubled worsted-weight WOOL yarn, about 8 ounces.
1. Cast on 60 stitches and join, being careful not to twist.
2. Knit all rounds until piece measures 12 inches. Be sure to measure the piece without stretching it.
3. Place marker and work next round as follows: *(knit 2, knit 2 together) *repeat for the round, ending with 45 stitches.
4. Knit next two rounds.
5. Next round: *(knit 1, knit 2 together) *repeat for the round, ending with 30 stitches.
6. Knit next round.
7. Next rounds: *(knit 2 together) *repeat until 8 stitches remain.
8. Cut yarn, leaving about an 8 inch tail. Thread yarn through remaining stitches, pull tight, and weave in tail until very securely fastened.
9. The hat is ready for felting! Either send it on to Warm Woolies and we’ll do the felting, or felt it yourself. If you do the felting, be sure to let the hat dry over a shape the size of a child’s head – between 19 and 21 inches.
