Charity Knitting - Knitting for Orphans

Warm Woolies is a non-profit organization whose volunteers knit warm clothing for poverty-stricken children who would otherwise suffer from cold. Our mission is to provide the very neediest children with wool sweaters, vests, hats, mittens, and socks.

In 2009, we're continuing to knit for children living in orphanages in Russia, Kazakhstan, China and Mongolia and on Reservations throughout the northern United States. Our goal for 2009 is to knit 10,000 pieces of warm wool clothing for these children!

We’ve grown! In order to make the best use of our volunteers’ time, save money, and improve efficiency, we have adopted some new policies. Please carefully read the following:

YARN FOR VOLUNTEERS

DONATION ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Every week here at Warm Woolies we open approximately 70 boxes of donations, and every month we ship about 1,000 finished pieces to children around the world. Due to such a large volume of incoming and outgoing boxes, we are implementing a new policy! Starting January 1st, 2009, if you would like an acknowledgment of your donation, you need to do one of the following things with EACH box you send:

  1.  Include a note in your box with your email address and a description of what you sent, OR
  2. Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with a note describing what you have sent for us to return to you, OR
  3. If you need a receipt for tax purposes, write a letter listing the items you donated and include it in a self-addressed, stamped envelope for Warm Woolies to sign, date and return to you, OR
  4. Use your shipper’s delivery confirmation service.

Thank you all for your continued support of Warm Woolies! This new policy will increase accuracy and save hundreds of dollars and volunteer hours.

HELP WITH SHIPPING COSTS

Warm Woolies needs your help with shipping costs.  In 2009, we ask those of you who are able to include a small donation when you send in finished pieces.  If each piece comes with 50 cents, we’ll be able to continue to deliver all pieces based on need, regardless of location.  Of course, larger donations are welcome!

If you're interested in knitting for children with the fewest resources, you've come to the right place. Please read over our "Guidelines for Knitters" page which will tell you where to start. Email us if you need additional information.
