Size 10 needles, stitch-holders, bulky or double worsted wool yarn.
Knit both Thick Mitts at the same time -when you're done, you're done!

1. Cast on 21 (21, 23) stitches.

2. Work K1, P1 ribbing for 3 inches.

3. Work in stockinette stitch for 4 rows.

4. Work thumb gusset as follows:

a. Knit 9 (9, 10), increase 1 stitch in next stitch, knit 1, increase 1 stitch in next stitch, knit 9 (9, 10).

b. Purl 1 row.

c. Knit 9 (9, 10), increase 1 stitch in next stitch, knit 3, increase 1 stitch in next stitch, knit 9 (9, 10).

d. Purl 1 row.

e. Continue increasing 2 stitches in the same manner as above until you have 7 (7, 9) stitches between increases. You will have 27 (27, 30) stitches on your needle.

f. Purl 1 row.

5. Work thumbs as follows:

6. Knit 10 (10, 11) stitches and place them on holder.

7. Knit next 7 (7, 9) stitches.

8. Place the remaining stitches on a stitch holder.

9. Work the thumb stitches in stockinette for 5 (6, 8) rows.

10. Next row: Knit 1, *knit 2 together, knit 1 across.

11. Next row: Purl 1, purl 2 together twice (twice, three times).

12. Draw remaining stitches together and fasten off. Sew thumb seam.

13. Place stitches from first stitch holder onto needle, attach yarn and pick up 1 (2, 2) stitches from base of thumb. Place remaining stitches from second stitch holder onto left hand needle and knit them.

14. Work these 21 (21, 23) stitches in stockinette until piece measures 3 (3¼, 3 ½) inches from base of thumb.

15. Work fingertip decreases as follows:

g. Row 1: *knit 1, knit 2 together to end.

h. Row2: Purl.

i. Row 3: *knit 2 together, knit 1 to end.

j. Row 4: Purl.

k. Row 5: knit 1, *knit 2 together to end.

16. Draw remaining stitches together and fasten off. Sew side seams.
