Charmed Knits - Projects for Fans of Harry Potter

Are you a Harry Potter fan?  If so, this special project is for you!  Knit an enchanted house hat with the magical property of warmth.  Warm Woolies is partnering with John Wiley and Sons, the publisher of Charmed Knits, as the recipient of hats knit during the Charmed Knits Knit Along.  The knit along is based on a pattern from Alison Hansel's forthcoming book, Charmed Knits - Projects for Fans of Harry Potter. For the downloadable free pattern, to register as a participant, and for all the project details please visit the Charmed Knits blogspot. We can't wait for your hats to start magically appearing!

The Allied Knitting Club: A Very Special Project

Warm Woolies operates a thriving knitting club at the Allied Jewish Apartments, a non-sectarian, independent and assisted living community in Denver.  Warm Woolies supplies and manages all of the knitting materials, provides instruction and guidance, and facilitates the Allied Knitting Club meetings.

The two dozen+ enthusiastic members meet weekly.  At the club meetings, members knit in a community, discuss their projects, compare and turn in finished pieces, and pickup materials for their next projects. Members are knitting hats, vests, and sweaters.  The knitters work independently and in small groups throughout the week.

The Allied knitters have already completed over 500 beautiful pieces for children living in extreme poverty on the Rose Bud and Pine Ridge Reservations in South Dakota.

Warm Woolies sends a very special thank you to Roselle Leviton, president of the Knitting Club, who does so much.  We could not accomplish what we do without her devotion.  (Roselle also knits at least 8-10 hats every week!)

Warm Woolies also thanks the Qwest Family & Work Development Fund whose generous grant makes this program possible.

Warm Woolies spent the first week of September on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. We set up a knitting workshop at the White Buffalo Calf Woman battered women’s shelter and spent the week teaching knitting skills to survivors of domestic violence. Over the course of the week, thirteen women and three pre-teen girls learned how to knit! It was wonderful to see pride on their faces as they mastered each new skill. When we left, the women had scarves and baby blankets underway.

As we worked together, we were moved by the camaraderie the women shared, by their patience, and by their puzzlement at our presence. It is rare for someone to come onto the reservation, much less into the shelter, to spend time the way Warm Woolies did. The women asked several times why we were there, why we were giving them boxes of yarn and so many sets of needles.

We were there because every child should be warm, both literally and figuratively, and nothing is warmer than something made especially for you with loving hands. We were there because we have so much while others have so little and that disparity is not fair. We were there because small seeds of kindness grow. We were there because we are all more alike than we are different. We were there because we could make a young girl’s spirit bloom simply by telling her she had beautiful hands.
