WARM WOOLIES January Vest–of–month

Seed Stitch Center Panel © (size 3 – 4)

 

Size 10 ½ or 11 circular needle, a spare needle to hold stitches.

Bulky or doubled worsted yarn – about 220 yards bulky or 440 yards worsted.

 

1. Cast on 60 stitches and join, placing marker at beginning of round.

2. Work 2 inches in garter stitch (knit 1 row + purl 1 row = 2 rows garter stitch).

3. Increase 6 stitches in next row by knitting into front and back of each 10 th stitch, ending with 66 stitches.

4. Knit 9, place marker and work next 15 stitches in (k1, p1) repeat, place marker and knit remaining 42 stitches.

5. Next round: Knit 9, slip marker and work next 15 stitches in (p1, k1) repeat, slip marker and knit remaining 42 stitches.

6. Continue until piece measures 9 inches, keeping the 15 stitches between the markers in seed stitch (knitting over the purled stitches and purling over the knit stitches).

7. Work underarm/armhole as follows:

a . Next round: MOVE BEGINNING OF ROUND MARKER BACK 7 STITCHES. From NEW beginning of round, proceed as follows: P14, k 2, work next 15 in established seed stitch pattern, k 2, p 14, k 19.

b . Next round: knit all stitches.

c . Next round: P 14, k 2, work next 15 in established seed stitch pattern, k 2, p 14, k 19.

d . Next round: k 3, bind off 8 stitches, k 5, work next 15 in established seed stitch pattern, k 5, bind off 8 stitches, k 22.

8. Your two armholes separate the front and back. The front and back should each have 25 stitches. (The back has 3 stitches in garter, followed by 21 in stockinet, followed by 3 in garter. The front has 3 stitches in garter, 2 in stockinet, 15 in seed stitch, 2 in stockinet, ending with 3 in garter.)

9. Work the back as follows:

a . Work for 5 inches keeping 3 stitches on each edge in garter stitch and middle 19 stitches in stockinet.

b . Continue for one inch working all stitches in garter stitch.

c . Next row: knit 7, bind off 11, knit 7 remaining stitches.

d . Place 14 remaining stitches onto a stitch holder.

10. Work the front as follows:

a. Work for 3-1/2 inches keeping 3 stitches on each edge in garter stitch. The center 15 stitches remain in seed stitch, with 2 stitches of stockinet between the seed and garter stitches.

b. Continue for one inch working all stitches in garter stitch.

c. Next row: knit 7, bind off 11, and knit 7 remaining stitches.

d. Work each group of 7 stitches in garter stitch until piece measures same as back.

11. Bind off shoulders using three-needle technique.
