The August vest was designed by Warm Woolies' good friend, Jackie H. of Denver. Jackie has knit over 50 vests for Warm Woolies so far this year. This pattern captures one of her many thoughtful innovations. Many, many thanks, Jackie!

This is a variation of the WarmWoolies Basic Vest, small size, so you should have that pattern handy to refer to. Using any design that includes at least TWO COLORS, follow basic pattern through step # 6. (This works well with stripes -- narrow, wide or random.)

Your two armholes separate the front and back. The front and back should each have 27 stitches (3 stitches in garter, followed by 21 in stockinet, followed by 3 in garter). Using one of your two colors, continue working the front in pattern (3 garter stitch, 21 stockinet, 3 garter) until piece measures 4 inches from armhole.

Starting with a WRONG SIDE row, knit all stitches for 3 rows.

On next row, bind off all but the last 7 stitches. Knit those 7 stitches. This will become one shoulder strap.

Continue working these 7 stitches in garter stitch (K every row) until shoulder strap measures 5 inches. Then shape point as follows:

First row: K1, K2 tog, K2, K2 tog, K1.

Next row: K 5.

Next row: K 2 tog, K1, K2 tog.

Next row: bind off 3, leaving a 12" tail.

Work the back in exactly the same way, using the other color. You should have one strap at each shoulder. One will go from the front of the vest to the back, and the other from the back of the vest to the front.

Fold the shoulder straps over so they overlap the top of the vest by about 1 1/2 inches. Using tail, sew on VERY SECURELY and weave in end. Sew decorative button onto each strap where it overlaps top of vest. Vest can be worn with either side in front.

Variation: Work shoulder straps until they measure 4 inches and bind off straight across, leaving a tail of at least 12". Using tail, securely sew bound-off edge of strap directly to bound-off top edge of vest. Weave in end. This version needs no buttons.
