Here at Warm Woolies were all about love! So, were offering ideas of how to embed your vests with all the warm thoughts of the Valentines holiday in code! And since the children who will wear these vests need to hear it more than most, well be sure to send the vests with the message translated into the language of their country.

The gray vest pictured below is knit roughly to this pattern. Notice that the garter stitch around the bottom was worked in a 1-4-3 row color sequence. The top of the back is worked in the same 1-4-3 color sequence, but the count was of garter stitch ridges, not rows. Note the message: it begins with love and ends with stronger love.

The striped vest has an embedded code as each new color was added, the old color was slipped in a 1-4-3 sequence. [Knit 1 stitch in the new color, slip a stitch in the old color as if to purl, knit 4 stitches in the new color, slip a stitch in the old color as if to purl, knit 3 stitches in the new color, slip a stitch in the old color as if to purl, continue knitting in the new color] Note the message: my love is with you at every change.

Of course, youre free to be creative with this! You could work a vest striping the whole thing in a 1-4-3 sequence; you could do a stitch or cable pattern. If you send us a vest showcasing a creative use of the code, well post its photo as inspiration.

Size 10 = or 11 circular needle, a spare needle to hold stitches.

Bulky or doubled worsted yarn about 220 yards bulky or 440 yards worsted, small amounts of yarn in three other colors.

1. Cast on 60 stitches and join, placing marker at beginning of round.

2. Work 8 rounds in garter stitch (knit 1 row + purl 1 row = 2 rows garter stitch) as follows: work round 1 in color A, works next 4 rounds in color B, work next 3 rounds in color C.

3. Increase 6 stitches in next round by knitting into front and back of each 10th stitch, ending with 66 stitches.

4. Continue knitting all stitches until piece measures 9 inches.

5. Work underarm/armhole as follows:

a. Next round: MOVE BEGINNING OF ROUND MARKER BACK 7 STITCHES. From NEW beginning of round, proceed as follows: P14, k 19, p 14, k 19.

b. Next round: knit all stitches.

c. Next round: P 14, k 19, p 14, k 19.

d. Next round: k 3, bind off 8 stitches, k 25, bind off 8 stitches, k 22.

6. Your two armholes separate the front and back. The front and back should each have 25 stitches. (They each have 3 stitches in garter, followed by 19 in stockinet, followed by 3 in garter.)

7. Work the back as follows:

a. Work for 4 = inches keeping 3 stitches on each edge in garter stitch and middle 19 stitches in stockinet. End with a row in which the middle 19 stitches are purled.

b. Work the next 16 rows in garter stitch as follows: knit 2 rows with color A, knit 8 rows with color B, knit 6 rows with color C.

c. Next row: knit 7, bind off 11, knit 7 remaining stitches.

d. Place 14 remaining stitches onto a stitch holder or spare needle.

8. Work the front as follows:

a. Work for 3-1/2 inches keeping 3 stitches on each edge in garter stitch, and the middle 19 stitches in stockinette.

b. Continue for one inch working all stitches in garter stitch.

c. Next row: knit 7, bind off 11, and knit 7 remaining stitches.

d. Work each group of 7 stitches in garter stitch until piece measures same as back.

9. Bind off shoulders using three-needle technique.
