WARM WOOLIES July Vest–of–the–month

The July vest was designed by Warm Woolies good friend, K.B. of Maine, whom you might recall designed the May vest. Many, many thank, K.B.!
Knitpicks Wool of the Andes, (or Cascade 220), used doubled
3 (3, 4, 5, 6) 50g skeins main color, plus 1 skein contrasting color
(A boucle or a hand dyed yarn is fun for the contrasting color)
Set of five dp needles or short circular needles in sizes 10 and 10 1/2
Gauge 14 sts to 4 inches, 5 rows to an inch
With two strands of MC held together and size 10 needles,
cast on 68, (72, 80, 88, 96) sts. Join in a round and
purl one round. Do not cut yarn.
Change to CC, K 1 round, P 1 round. Do not cut yarn.
Change to MC, K 1 round, P 1 round.
Change to CC, K 1 round, P 1 round. Cut yarn.
Change to MC, K 1 round, P the next round, increasing as follows:
For size 1 only (K 7, increase by purling into the back and then the front of the next st, K 8, increase) repeat 3 more times around, 76 sts.
For sizes 2 (4, 6, 8) increase in every 9th (10th, 11th, 12th) st to 80 (88, 96, 104) sts.
Change to size 10 = needles and knit 26 (30, 34, 38, 42) rounds even.
Upper Back: turn and purl back 30 (32, 36, 40, 44) sts. Place next 8 sts on each side of these back sts on a holder or scrap yarn for underarm sts. Turn and work upper back piece as follows:
Dec row: K 1, SSK, knit to the last 3 sts, K 2 tog, K 1.
Purl 1 row.
Repeat last 2 rows 1 (1, 1, 2, 2) more times- 26 (28, 32, 34, 38) sts.
Work even in stockinette stitch for 15 (17, 19, 21, 23) more rows.
Make strap: Purl 7 (7, 7, 8, 8) sts.
K 1, SSK, knit to end of row.
Work 5 rows stockinette st. Cut yarn and place sts on holder.
Leaving center back sts on holder, slip last 7 (7, 7, 8, 8) sts onto a needle.
Make other strap: join yarn on WS and purl 7 (7, 7, 8, 8).
Knit to last 3 sts, K 2 tog, K 1.
Work 5 rows even. Cut yarn and place sts on holder.
Upper Front: Place 30 (32, 36, 40, 44) sts on needle. Join yarn on WS and purl 1 row.
Dec row: K 1, SSK, knit to last 3 sts, K 2 tog, K 1.
Purl 1 row.
Repeat last 2 rows 1 (1, 1, 2, 2) more times- 26 (28, 32, 34, 38) sts.
Work even in stockinette stitch, for 9 (11, 13, 15, 17) more rows.
Make strap: Purl 8 (8, 8, 9, 9) sts.
Decrease: K 1, SSK, knit to end of row.
Repeat last 2 rows one more time.
Work 9 rows even. Three needle bind off to corresponding back strap.
Leaving center front sts on holder, place last 8 (8, 8, 9, 9) sts on needle. Join yarn on WS and purl 1 row.
Dec row: K to last 3 sts, K 2 tog, K 1.
Repeat last 2 rows one more time.
Work 9 rows even. Three needle bind off to corresponding back strap.
Neckline trim: with RS facing, CC yarn, and 5 size 10 dp needles, starting after sts on holder for back, with needle one-pick up and knit 8 sts along upper back & 12 sts down front, with needle two-knit across sts on holder for center front, with needle three-pick 12 sts on other side of front & 8 on back, with needle four-knit across sts on holder for back.
Dec: Purl around, making a p 2 tog decrease at the beginning and end of needles one and three. Cut yarn.
Join MC, Knit around, making a K 2 tog decrease at the beginning and end of needles one and three.
Bind off in purl.
Armhole trim: With right side facing, CC yarn and size 10 needles: pick up and knit 2 sts in every three rows around front & back, knit 8 sts from underarm holder.
P 2 tog, purl to last 10 sts, P 2 tog, P 8. Cut yarn.
Join MC, K 2 tog, knit to last 10 sts, K 2 tog, K 8. Bind off in purl.
Run ends in & you are done!
