The September vest was also designed by Warm Woolies' good friend, Jackie H. of Denver. This pattern captures another of her many thoughtful innovations. Many, many thanks, Jackie!
Size 10 1/2 or 11 circular needle. Use a solid color of bulky or doubled worsted yarn as Main Color (MC) and sock yarn or other very thin variegated yarn as Accent Color (AC).
NOTE: this pattern has a lot of purling, because purl stitches show off the colors of the variegated accent yarn better.
1. Using MC, cast on 64 stitches and join.
2. Work 1 1/2 inches in garter stitch.
3. Increase 8 stitches in next row by knitting into front and back of each 8th stitch, ending with 72 stitches.
4. Add AC and work the following pattern until piece measures 9 inches:
(P 5 using MC and AC together; K 1 with MC only, holding AC in back of work), repeat.
5. When piece measures 9 inches, stop using AC and continue in MC only. Work armholes as follows, beginning with one of the K stitches:
a. Next round: work 25 stitches in stripe pattern, P 11, 25 in pattern, P 11.
b. Next round: work 25 stitches in pattern, K 11, 25 in pattern, K 11.
c. Next round: work 25 stitches in pattern, P 11, 25 in pattern, P 11
d. Next round: work 25 stitches in pattern, K 2, bind off 7, K 2, repeat.
6. Your two armholes separate the front and back. The front and back each have 29 stitches (2 in garter stitch, 25 in stripe pattern, 2 in garter)
7. Work the back as follows:
a. Work for 5 inches keeping 2 stitches on each edge in garter stitch and middle 25 stitches in stripe pattern.
b. Continue for one inch working all stitches in garter stitch.
c. Next row: knit 7, bind off 15, knit 7 remaining stitches.
d. Place 14 remaining stitches onto a stitch holder.
8. Work the front as follows:
a. Work for 3-1/2 inches keeping 2 stitches on each edge in garter stitch and middle 25 stitches in stripe pattern.
b. Continue for one inch working all stitches in garter stitch.
c. Next row: knit 7, bind off 15, knit 7 remaining stitches.
d. Work each group of 7 stitches in garter stitch until piece measures same as back.
9. Bind off shoulders using three-needle technique.
